Rais Bhuiyan V. Governor Perry of Texas
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – JULY 18, 2011
***PRESS RELEASE***PRESS NOTICE***
WHAT: Hearing in the case of Rais Bhuiyan vs. Governor Rick Perry
WHEN: 3pm, July 18, 2011
WHERE: 353rd District Civil Court, Travis County Courthouse, 1000 Guadalupe, Austin, TX 78701
A man who survived being shot in the face in the aftermath of the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York has been granted a hearing in Austin on Monday July 18 , to demand that the Governor of Texas, Rick Perry, respect his rights as a victim of violent crime.
Rais Bhuiyan was shot by Mark Stroman in October 2001. Mark Stroman was addicted to methamphetamine and outraged by the events of 9-11 and felt that his country was not doing enough to deal with the terrorist attacks in New York. He killed two innocent men and tried to kill Mr. Bhuiyan.
When Mark Stroman was sentenced to death in 2002 Mr. Bhuiyan was not given the opportunity to tell the court that he was strongly against the death penalty and did not ever wish for his attacker to be executed. Due to his strong religious belief in forgiveness Mr. Bhuiyan has requested a healing dialogue through victim mediation with Mr. Stroman but has had no response to his request from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
Failed again and again as a victim on Monday, July 18, Mr. Bhuiyan will take his case before a court in Austin, Texas and demand that his rights be respected under Texas Law.
Rais Bhuiyan said: "Governor Perry has often said that the rights of victims are a priority but he has continued to ignore me as a victim of a terrible crime that took place here in the state of Texas. On Monday I will demand my rights as a victim in front of the courts."
Khurrum Wahid, Mr. Bhuiyan’s lawyer said: "All we are seeking is an injunction to stop Mr Stroman's execution so that we may grant an American victim of violence the same rights under the law as are granted to many other Texan victims. This is not about Mr Stroman. Its about victim rights. Do we believe they exist or not? Because if we cannot enforce them they don't exist for any of us."
Mr. Bhuiyan and his legal team will be available for comment after the hearing.

Bhuiyan has created a website called World Without Hate to educate others about hate crimes as a means of preventing them. He's also working with Amnesty International and Stroman's defense attorney, who has filed several appeals on Stroman's death sentence.
"I strongly believe executing him is not a solution. We will just simply lose a human life without dealing with the root cause, which is hate crime," Bhuiyan says. "In Islam it says that saving one human life is the same as saving the entire mankind. Since I forgave him, all those principles encouraged me to go even further, and stop his execution and save another human life."
